Frequently Asked Questions About E-Bikes
Are e-bikes legal in Tasmania?
Yes. All pedal-assist e-bikes up to 250W and 25 km/h are legal in Tasmania. Every model we sell meets Australian standards.
How far can an e-bike go in Hobart?
Expect 50–120 km depending on hills, rider weight, wind, assist mode and terrain. Tasmania’s climbs use more battery, so 500–800Wh systems are ideal.
Which e-bike motor is best for Hobart?
For steep climbs and off-road terrain, Bosch Performance Line CX and Shimano EP8/EP6 motors are the most reliable and capable choices — especially for Tasmania’s long, punchy climbs and rocky trails.
If you prefer a lighter, more natural riding experience, the TQ Harmonic Pin Ring motor - TQ HPR50 is a premium option, Found on Trek's Fuel+ EX8 Gen 2
It’s incredibly quiet, ultra-smooth and designed for riders who want the feel of a traditional mountain bike with just the right amount of assist for Tasmania’s rolling terrain and moderate climbs.
Can I ride an e-MTB on the trails?
Yes, e-MTBs are permitted at Meehan Range, Clarence MTB Park, Glenorchy MTB Park and most Tasmanian trail networks.
Can I charge an e-bike at home?
Yes. All bikes use standard 240V home chargers.
What size battery do I need?
Most Hobart riders prefer 600–800Wh for range and climbing performance.
What Is an E-Bike?
An e-bike—also known as an electric bicycle, e-MTB or e-road bike—is a bicycle with a motor that assists your pedalling. You still ride it normally, but the motor gives extra power when climbing, riding into wind or covering longer distances.
E-bikes have become extremely popular due to better battery tech, lighter motors and improved designs. They’re ideal for commuters, fitness riders, off-road riders and anyone wanting to ride further with less effort.
We only stock pedal-assist e-bikes (legal in Australia), which provide natural-feeling assistance based on how hard you pedal.
How Far Can an E-Bike Go?
Range depends on battery size, rider weight, hills, wind, tyre choice and assist mode.
Typical range:
-
Off-road: 30–40 km on steep / technical terrain
-
Mixed: 50–80 km
-
Road: 80–150+ km on larger batteries
Tasmania’s hills + wind = bigger batteries recommended.
